Silent Hill takes us on an adventure within a child's mind and her mother Rose (Radha Mitchell) trying to get to the bottom of her daughter's sleepwalking nightmares. They travel to the uncharted town called Silent Hill. Locals declare the place to be abandoned and toxic due to suffering from a perpetually burning coal mine. Actually the town is gripped in an alternate dimension by the wrath of the reaper and the fires of hell referred to as the darkness. We are unfamiliar to the Horror genre. The plot was difficult to discover. Many hints about what had happened to Silent Hill and the fate of the community are revealed along the way, but still very sketchy. The primary characters are all female in a Steel Magnolias-of-horror sort of way. The gore rated excellent, but sparse. Freak factor is high as well. Apparently, this movie is based on a video game. We have no comments about that since we haven't even heard of the video game.

We gave this film a C which needs to be marked with an asterisk because of our lack of experience in the horror genre and no experience with the video game by the same title. Some parts were great and we found some wonderful visuals and good-evil dilemma, but too many extended durations with no dialog, combined with a sketchy explanation of who's daughter belongs to which mother. In the end, we were left with too many unresolved issues. A second viewing may be helpful.

We watched this film on the digital cable's free area for on demand viewing provided by Fear Dot Com and our local service provider. Free is about right, along with some cheap beer.
